🎉 New Feature!
Looking to take payments over the phone?
Rvvup’s Pay by Card offers a Virtual Terminal feature in the Rvvup Dashboard that allows you to accept debit and credit card transactions over the phone.
What is a Virtual Terminal?
A Virtual Terminal is an online version of a physical credit card terminal. It is sometimes referred to as a “MOTO (mail order/telephone order) transaction” as it allows you to enter debit or credit card information directly into a web-based system to process a transaction without the customer’s physical card present for the sale.
Virtual Terminal vs Payment Links
Both Virtual Terminal and Payment Links allow you to take a payment from a customer directly (outside of a traditional online checkout) but there are a few differences.
Virtual Terminal is a customary way to create a payment on behalf of a customer, usually by taking their credit or debit card information over the phone. This allows you to quickly and easily take a payment, but given that the customer is not present, it doesn’t allow you to run 3D Secure and could expand your PCI compliance requirements.
Payment Links are a new take on manual payments that allow you to create a custom link that you send to your customer. When your customer clicks the link, they’ll be asked to complete the payment process on their own device (mobile phone or computer). This allows them to choose their payment method and securely enter their sensitive information, all while taking advantage of additional fraud protection and limiting your PCI burden.

Does 3DS work on Virtual Terminal transactions?
Short answer: No. Virtual Terminal transactions, although convenient, carry inherent fraud risks, with the most prevalent being the use of stolen credit card information to place fraudulent orders. While 3D Secure offers an additional layer of authentication for Card Not Present (CNP) transactions and can shift liability for chargebacks during online transactions, this benefit does not typically extend to Virtual Terminal transactions.
- If a Card Not Present (CNP) transaction is disputed or fraudulent activity is detected after a Virtual Terminal transaction, the liability shift that protects merchants in online environments does not apply because Virtual Terminal payments don't pass through authentication.
- As you can't confirm the identity of your customer for orders received by mail or over the phone, merchants handling Virtual Terminal transactions may end up being responsible for financial losses resulting from chargebacks, even if 3D Secure is in place for other types of transactions.
An alternative option is to use Payment Links.
